I Have A Life: Mexico

I Have a Life: Mexico In this edition of I Have a Life; I visit my blood in Mexico, I eat the local cuisine, photograph every damn thang and endanger my life via unprotected motorsports. All photos shot on Kodak Portra film using a Mamiya 645AF system. The first part was a visit to Culiacan, Sinaloa; world famous for it’s role in the international drug trade. Most people don’t know that Sinaloa is the “salad bowl” of Mexico. Tomatoes are the name of the game.

The trip started with a visit to my grandmothers house in Culiacan, Sinaloa. Grandma is in her 90’s and is still active. She refuses to use a cane instead preferring to use grandchildren to maneuver around.   (Pictured here blinking. “Cerro de La Silla, Monterrey” is seen adjacent)

I was spoiled day and night at grandmas. Machaca for breakfast and Menudo for lunch. These foods alleviate : hangovers, heartbreak and the common Cold.

We played with matches with little cousin.

I got Ice Cream and witnessed old school meat techniques at the central market. The Zebu bovine is lauded for it’s ability to withstand humid weather and bad ass humps.

Next Came Monterrey, Nuevo Leon. Monterrey is one of the industrial centers of Mexico. It has deep roots that run back to the 1500’s.  The city is known for Steel, Auto Parts and Beer. Brands like Tecate, Dos Equis and Bohemia are produced in the city. It’s considered the most “americanized” city in Mexico. That basically means that there are Microbrews, Costcos and multinationals with headquarters there. Oh and lots of off road vehicles, Rubicon style.   Botero has a sculpture in the civic center.

We went for a river boat ride in Parque Fundidora. Followed by random Mercedes limos rolling through.

Parque Fundidora was built over the old foundry. It’s massive, has bike paths, funky buildings and an artificial river. The park is in the oldest part of the city good for portraits. Cobble stones and all that good stuff.

Las Cumbres de Monterrey National Park has some movie like landscapes. People also come here to do some “casual motorsports”.

Foothills and Lakes. Also, some dude got cray and drove his Jeep into the river.

To end the trip I did a video game style picture in picture of me cruising. Monterrey_Nov_201454810030_copy I Have A Life is a continuing series focusing on life outside work.
